Inequality and assessment in early years education

This paper will discuss the research outlined in my book `Understanding Early Years Inequality' (2013), with some updates on developments since the study was undertaken. Data arising from ethnographic studies of Reception classrooms (children aged 4-5) in London will be used to examine the complex relationship between assessment and disparities in attainment by `race', class and gender. The reaction to this research from the DfE, the press and from Reception teachers will also be discussed, alongside the recent changes to assessment in the early years introduced by the coalition government.
