Sociology of Education Seminar Series: Using Bourdieu's concept of field to explore mathematics education research in the UK and the place of publication in the work of academics

In the seminar I will introduce a mixed-methods study of the place of publication in the work of academics in mathematics education. Interviews with a small number of academics in mathematics education focused on their sense-making around publication decisions and on their sense of connection, of belonging or of distance from mathematics education research and researchers. I will discuss the value of Bourdieu's concept of field in exploring a `non-traditional' academic field such as education research, a relatively diverse area of research with strong links to professional practice
