Autism Initiative
At least one in every hundred children is on the autistic spectrum, yet schools and colleges struggle to provide appropriate education for this vulnerable group. Few teachers receive autism specific training and children with autism often end up excluded from school.
Huge resources are used in dealing with the consequences of disaffected, excluded or bullied pupils both at school and in their adult lives – in terms of low rates of paid employment, social care, and profound and avoidable isolation.
We hope to change this through developing our understanding of how people with autism learn and develop, we will work to improve provision in both specialist and mainstream schools. By investigating how to remove barriers to learning, we can tackle the causes, rather than treating the symptoms, of educational disadvantage resulting from autism.
