Equality Act 2010(0.11Kb)Equality and Diversity
The Institute of Education recognises the benefits of having a diverse community of staff and students, who value one another and the different contributions they can make to achieve the Institute's mission to be a centre of excellence. The Institute is fully committed to being an equal opportunities employer and providing equality of opportunity for all of its staff, students, applicants and visitors and we seek to create an open and supportive environment which is free from discrimination, and one which encourages all staff and students to participate fully in Institute activities. The Institute will not tolerate unfair or unlawful discrimination on the grounds of gender, ethnicity, disability, religion, nationality, age or sexual orientation, or any other distinction.
Our Corporate Strategy 2007 – 2010 sets out the Institute's key objectives in relation to equality and diversity under our promoting public engagement priority area, and states our commitment to:
- Continue to promote equality of opportunity and encourage staff and students from all backgrounds to participate fully in Institute activities.
- Maintain an inclusive and supportive work and study environment which enables all staff and students to fulfil their potential.
- Respond to equalities issues, including those relating to race, gender, disability, religion or belief, sexual orientation and age, and recognise the complexities of the interrelations between them.
- Pay particular attention to equalities issues in teaching, learning and assessment.
Our equalities policies and plans help set out our aspirations and how we will achieve these commitments.
The Institute's Governing Body and Senior Management Team have responsibility for ensuring that the Institute operates within the legal framework for equality. However, each member of the Institute community is responsible for preventing discrimination which it is within their control to prevent or challenge. Whatever your role within the Institute, you have an important part to play in creating a community that values every contribution and respects every individual.
The Institute has a dedicated Equalities Manager whose role is to support and advise senior management, committee members and all staff on equality and diversity matters related to staff, prospective staff and visitors. The Equalities Manager is supported by Equality and Diversity Advisers within Faculties and Support Departments. The Equalities Manager works with key staff within the Institute who support equalities issues in relation to students to ensure that equality and diversity issues are embedded into every aspect of the Institute's operation and activities. Contact details for these staff are listed below.
Please see the Institute's policies, procedures and reports in relation to equality and diversity.
