Professor Husbands became Director of the Institute of Education in January 2011.
Professor Husbands has research interests in education policy, teacher education and history education. He has written widely in these areas. He has directed numerous research projects, including the National Evaluation of Children's Trusts (2004-2009) and the evaluation of the leadership development programme for Directors of Children's Services (2009-2010), as well as a comparative study of high performing education systems for the UK government. He is a Board member of the Training and Development Agency for Schools, a member of the expert panel on learning for the National Trust and a former board member of two large examination groups.
Professor Husbands began his professional career as a teacher of history, and taught in urban comprehensive schools before entering higher education. Before his appointment as Director of the Institute he led large schools of education at the Universities of Warwick and East Anglia. He joined the Institute in 2007 as Professor of Education and Dean of Faculty.
