This seminar will discuss the methods and approaches used in attempting to write a new history of English teaching in the `Social Change and English, 1945-1965' project. In this Leverhulme-Trust funded research project we adopted an in-depth case study approach to enable us to reconstruct the teaching and learning of the subject English in London schools in the period 1945-1965, making use of what we believe to be a uniquely wide range of sources. The paper will discuss our choice of a case study approach, the selection of schools and the range of oral, written and visual evidence we have employed.
