The Centre undertakes research on the distinctive history and culture of Catholic schooling and issues of ethos, curricula, leadership and 'effectiveness' of Catholic education, nationally and internationally. Established in 1997, the Centre as the first ever research centre for Catholic education in Europe, is supported by donations from religious Congregations with missions in education.

The Centre is located in the Department of Learning, Curriculum and Communication. It provides tutorial support and advice for students undertaking scholarly and research investigations in the field of Catholic education. In addition to Professor Grace, other staff associated with CRDCE are:- Dr Paddy Walsh (Deputy Director), and Research Associates, Dr Christopher Storr, Dr Eric Tope and Dr Clare Watkins.
