The Beyond Access Project
Introduction/summary of research project
Beyond Access was set up in 2003 by Oxfam GB, the Institute of Education, University of London and the U.K. Department for International Development (DFID). It aims to contribute to achieving Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 2 – universal primary education - and MDG 3 – gender equality and the empowerment of women - by generating and critically examining knowledge and practice regarding gender equality and education.
Summary of activities
Since 2003 Beyond Access has brought together a wide network of practitioners, policy makers, and academics working in many different contexts to explore critical issues that affect the achievement of gender equality in education. Specific Beyond Access activities include:
• An innovative series of international seminars on selected topics in gender, education and development convened between 2003 and 2005. These took place in London, Nairobi, Oxford, Norwich and Dhaka. Each brought together academics, policy makers and practitioners to discuss particular aspects of gender equality and education. Papers presented at the seminars can be downloaded here (link to downloads of seminar papers)
• The publication of the Equals newsletter on Gender, Education and Development, featuring articles written by researchers, practitioners and policy makers, conference reports, book reviews and letters. Recent issues of the Equals newsletter can be downloaded here (link to Equals downloads)

Beyond Access books include Beyond Access: Transforming Policy and Practice for Gender Equality in Education and Practicing Gender Equality in Education, edited by Sheila Aikman and Elaine Unterhalter and Gender Equality, HIV and AIDS: A Challenge for the Education Sector, edited by Sheila Aikman, Elaine Unterhalter and Tania Boler.
