Electronic access

The library provides access to a wide range of electronic resources in education and the social sciences. Many are freely available on the web, but others are on a subscription only basis with usage currently restricted to IOE students and staff.

Details of electronic journals, eBooks and documents are included in the library catalogue.

Access to subscribed electronic content
Institute staff and students are all provided with an ATHENS account for use with subscription services. They will gain immediate access to subscribed journals, databases and other electronic resources using an IOE computer (sometimes in conjunction with their  ATHENS account or other password). Institute staff and students can 'borrow' and read eBooks online using their ATHENS account.

Remote access to resources is possible via the Portal or using an ATHENS account. 

Electronic Journals
We subscribe to over 3000 full-text eJournals. Many are also available in print format for reference use within the library only. See journals for more information.

eBooks and documents
The library subscribes to over 600 eBooks from a variety of publishers. In addition electronic documents such as official publications are freely available on the web via direct links from the library catalogue.  See our Guide to Finding and using e-books.

Databases  
Subscription databases such as British Education Index and ERIC index many thousands of journal articles, conference papers and official publications and are fully searchable. Many other databases in education and the wider social science are freely avialable on the web including a concise version of ERIC. See databases for more details.
