Austache, completed October 2005
This was a year-long project undertaken at the Archives of the Institute of Education, supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Austausche is the German word for 'exchange, interchange, replacement or substitution'. This one word encapsulates the broad themes of the four archive collections that have been catalogued and explored during the course of the project. Over 33,000 items have been electronically catalogued to current archival standards.
These collections relate directly to the rebuilding of education in Germany after the Second World War and provide a fascinating insight into conditions in post-war Europe. They consist of organisational records, academic and personal papers, correspondence, publications, photographs, cuttings and ephemera dating from 1939-1958. They explore and illustrate the history and philosophy of education, and Anglo-German relations during the 1940s and 1950s.
The project website offers details of the archive collections, biographical sketches of the main participants, discussions of the various themes illustrated by the archive materials http://austausche.ioe.ac.uk.
Beginnings, part of the Archive Awareness Campaign 2005
Ten higher education archives have collaborated to produce a website dedicated to the early history of their respective institutions.
Many of the HE institutions in central London have been in existence for over 100 years and have played a vital part in the life of the city. All of the participating colleges, institutes and universities have extensive archive collections. These archives usually contain historical papers relating to their institutions, but also hold a wealth of archive material on other subjects.
This website will focus both on the historical buildings scattered around the Bloomsbury and Westminster area, and on the valuable archives held there.
Participating institutions are:
Institute of Commonwealth Studies
Institute of Education, University of London
King's College London
London School of Economics
London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine
Royal Holloway, University of London
School of Oriental and African Studies
Senate House, University of London
University College London; and
University of Westminster.
Each institution has its own page on the website, complete with a historical outline and images. The project website is available at http://beginnings.ioe.ac.uk.
