Gateways and portals

These specialist subject information gateways and portals are highly focussed on their subject areas and only list resources which have been carefully evaluated by subject experts. They allow searching and browsing and all are freely available on the web.

AHDS (Arts and Humanities Data Service)
A UK national service aiding the discovery, creation and preservation of digital resources in and for research, teaching and learning in the arts and humanities. It covers Archaeology, History, Literature, Languages and Linguistics, the Performing and Visual Arts.

Biz/ed
Is a primary provider of Internet-based learning materials for the economics and business education community. It offers a unique combination of primary and secondary teaching and learning resources, integrating resource discovery with simulations, worksheets, glossaries, spreadsheets and resource databases.

British Education Internet Resource Catalogue / BEIRC
Note: BEIRC has been amalgamated within a new British Education Index interface. A new user guide is in preparation. The BEIRC offers professionally evaluated and indexed Internet sites, documents, reports and projects which support and explore educational research, policy and practice in the UK.
The collection contains over 4000 current and archived records from 2001 onwards and many predating this period, with particular reference to government departments and agencies relevant to the study, practice and administration of education.

Educational Evidence Portal / EEP
A joint venture by a consortium of UK organisations who wish to disseminate research evidence more widely. These include amongst others, the Department for Children, Schools and Families, National Foundation for Education Research and the Training and Development Agency for Schools. It provides free access to practical evidence and research materials to underpin practice and policymaking.
Search functions include a 'selected resources' option limited to resources from a subset of organisations indexed using British Education Thesaurus terms to provide a more finely-grained search approach.

Eldis
Aims to share the best in development, policy, practice and research. It contains over 18,000 online full text documents, 30 subject-focused resource guides, country profiles, newsfeeds and email newsletters.

Excellence Gateway
The new online service for post-16 learning and skills providers replacing Learning and Skills Web and Excalibur. It includes thousands of examples of effective practice from learning and skills organisers, leading online resources and information from the QIA's existing programmes and services. Personalised options allow users to bookmark resources, save searches, receive personalised news feeds, take part in online forums and submit new material and resources.

History
The Institute of Historical Research (IHR) provides a wide range of Internet resources for historians. These include free online articles, searchable databases of new and forthcoming history books, university history teachers in the UK, ongoing and completed research in history at universities in the UK and a database of historical websites.

Intute: Arts and Humanities
Two hubs of the Resource Discovery Network (RDN), Artifact and Humbul, have been integrated to create Intute: Arts and Humanities, offering an easy-to-use and powerful tool for discovering the best Internet resources for education and research in the Creative Arts and Humanities.

Intute: Health and Life Sciences
Formerly known as the RDN service BIOME, this portal provides quality online resources covering Medicine, Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health, Agriculture, Food and Forestry, Veterinary Medicine, Bioresearch and Natural History.

Intute: Science, Engineering and Technology
This portal has been created by bringing together three hubs of the RDN: EEVL (Engineering, Mathematics and Computing), GEsource (Geography and Environment), and PSIgate (Physical Sciences) offering a free, easy-to-use and powerful tool for discovering the best Internet resources in these fields.

Intute: Social Sciences
Brings together two hubs of the RDN: Altis and SOSIG covering the very best web resources in the social sciences, including education, law, business, hospitality, sport and tourism.

PINAKES
Provides links to all the major subject gateways. Users can either select a gateway directly or choose a subject from the drop down menu to access the appropriate gateway.
