  • Summary:
    • I was originally appointed to the Institute as a lecturer in sociology of education and this remains the disciplinary basis of my research. My work draws on the sociology of knowledge with a specific focus on curriculum issues and the role of qualifications in educational reform. I also have an interest in mobile learning and the curriculum role of digital technologies, user generated knowledge and debates about genericism and generic skills.
  • Teaching:
    • I teach on three of the modules within the MA in Lifelong Learning (Theoretical Perspectives, Professions and Professional Education and Vocational Learning) , supervise PhD students in my areas of specialisation and give occasional lectures.
  • Research Projects:
    • I am about to co-direct a project for the International Labour Organisation on the globalisation of National Qualification Frameworks.
  • Postgraduate Research:
    • sociology knowledge and the curriculum, vocational pedagogy and vocational knowledge, qualifications and national qualifications frameworks and their impact on educational policy. I am currently supervising one student (Charmaine Sam) for a PhD on the reform of the Nationa Curriculum in Singapore.
  • Professional Activities:
    • I am a Visiting Professor at the Universities of Bath, Pretoria, Witwatersrand, Capital Normal University Beijing assistant editor of the Journal of Education and Work and a member of the Editorial Advisory Boards of the British Journal of Sociology of Education and Critical Studies in Education. I am a Fellow of the City and Guids of London Institute and was awarded an Honourary Doctorate in Social Sciences by the University of Finland.
