• Summary:
  • I taught in primary schools, a college of higher education and at Leeds University before becoming Professor of Primary Education at the Institute of Education, where I was Head of the Department of Early Childhood and Primary Education 2005-2010. My particular interests are literacy and teacher education.
• Research Projects:
  • I recently led an international ESRC-funded seminar series on Reconceptualising Writing 5-16: Cross-phase and cross-disciplinary perspectives, involving leading authorities from the USA, Europe and the UK.br>
    The seminars have formed the basis of the Sage Handbook of Writing Development (Beard, Myhill and Riley, 2009).
    
    I also recently led an ESRC-funded research project on 'Development in Writing at the End of Key Stage 2' (RES-000-22-1050). See publications by Beard and Burrell below.
    
    In 2008 I was commissioned by the European Parliament, with Dr. David Crook, to undertake a review of the Content and Quality of Primary Teacher Education Across the European Union (PE 397.251).
