    • My research interests centre around three areas of specialization:

      1) Research theory and methodologies: Visual and Multimodal research and and Video-based research
      2) Technology mediated teaching and learning: notably its affect on classroom practices, and subject knowledge
      3) Multimodal school based research: with a focus on urban schooling, identities, policy and curriculum

      Recent research project areas include: the development of multimodal methods for researching digital data and environments, the effects of government technology initiatives on learning in the secondary school and the home, and the changing practices of teaching and learning in the classroom.

  • Postgraduate Research:
    • I am interested in supervising students with interests in: visual research, any aspect of multimodal research, studies using and investigating video-based research, the use of technologies for learning and teaching in the school and the home, multimodal perspectives on urban schooling, multimodal identities (e.g. dress, and hair), research that takes a long view of technology.
  • Professional Activities:
    • I am a founding editor of the journal Visual Communication, and I am on the editorial boards of Educational Review, Digital Culture & Education, Australian Journal of Language and Literacy; and International Journal of Learning (RMIT). I review articles for a number of journals including Literacy; Language and Education; Linguistics and Education; ALT-J Research in Learning Technology; JCAL;Teacher Education; Social Semiotics; Learning and Instruction; Educational Review; English in African Studies.

      I have served as a reviewer for a number of research funding programs including the ESRC's Digital Social Research programme, Singapore Ministry of Education Digital Strand, Canadian Research Council, National Research Foundation Council for South Africa.
