  • Qualifications and position:
    • BSc(Hons), PhD
    • Chair of Social Statistics
    • Professor, Educational Statistics and Biostatistics, University of California, Berkeley
      Editor of Statistical Methods in Medical Research
  • Faculty:
  • Department:
  • Summary:
    • Sophia's research interests are in multilevel, latent variable, longitudinal and measurement modelling. Recently she has focused on developing a modelling framework, GLLAMM, (http://www.gllamm.org), that unifies and extends multilevel and structural equation models. She wrote the Stata program gllamm for estimating these models by maximum likelihood. Her work is published in a number of journals including Psychometrika, Journal of Econometrics, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society (Series A) and Biometrics and in two recent books: Generalized Latent Variable Modeling: Multilevel, Longitudinal and Structural Equation Models and Multilevel and Longitudinal Modeling Using Stata (Second Edition).
  • Research Projects:
    • ESRC National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM), ADMIN (Administrative Data: Methods, Inference and Network) Node – July 2008-June 2011 (RES-576-25-0014). (Co-investigator: Director of Methodology).
  • Postgraduate Research:
    • • Estimation of generalized linear mixed models;
      • Combining multilevel regression and measurement (e.g. item response) models;
      • Empirical Bayes prediction in latent variable models;
      • Incorporating survey weights in multilevel modelling;
      • Methodological issues when linking survey and administrative data;
      • Longitudinal data analysis and dealing with dropout/attrition;
      • Estimation of models with crossed random effects;
      • Endogenous treatment models.
  • Professional Activities:
    • Editor: Statistical Methods in Medical Research.
      Associate Editor: Psychometrika (2005-present), Statistical Modelling (2005-present) and The Stata Journal (2001-present).
      Editorial Boards: Psychological Methods (2007-present)and Structural Equation Modeling (2006-present).
      Advisory Boards: Principal panel member of the Statistics and Modeling Review Panel (grant proposals), Institute of Education Sciences, US Department of Education, 2009-present. Technical Advisory Group for the OECD Program of International Student Assessment (PISA), 2007-present. Design and Analysis Committee for the U.S. National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), 2006-present.
  • Conferences/presentations:
    • `Generalized linear latent and mixed models' 11th Annual Symposium on Statistics in Psychiatry, Yale University, New Haven, CT, USA, 2010.
      `Multilevel latent variable modeling', Statistical Modelling and Inference Conference to celebrate Murray Aitkin's 70th birthday. Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia, 2010.
