Academic standards
We are proud of the quality of our teaching.
Student tuition is monitored, and developed, as part of our quality enhancement procedures. All IOE staff are required to be trained educators, continually updating their teaching and supervision skills, as well as experts in their field.
Quality assurance
Our qualifications are based on the highest academic standards. We are regularly assessed for quality by independent agencies. Ratings for our programmes leading to academic qualifications, are:
- Teacher training programmes: we are classified as a "Category A provider", by the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted). This is their highest rating.
- All academic programmes: "Broad confidence" in our academic standards was reported by The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) in their last audit. This is their highest rating.
- Research degree programmes: we are recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)
- Educational psychology programmes: we are accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS).
Given our high standards, why doesn't the IOE feature in newspaper league tables for UK universities? We are not eligible for most league tables because they are based on undergraduate programmes of study, whereas most of ours are postgraduate.
Qualifications
We offer programmes, at four levels, leading to these academic awards.
Doctoral level:
- doctorates (PhD, EdD, DEdPsy)
Masters level:
- masters degrees (MA, MSc, MRes, MEd, MBA, MTeach)
- post-graduate diplomas and certificates (PG Dip, PGCert)
Honours level:
- undergraduate degrees (BEd, BA)
- graduate diplomas and certificates (GDip, GCert)
Intermediate level:
- foundation degree (FdA)
Our qualifications are awarded by the "Institute of Education, University of London". Every successful candidate receives an award certificate and is entitled to attend a graduation ceremony.
We also offer many short courses that don't lead to an academic qualification; for example, Continuing Professsional Development courses and masters modules that can be taken as stand-alone courses. These are ideal for brushing up professional knowledge and skills or as "tasters" before committing to a programme of study.
