Loans and Grants

Tuition Fee Loans for PGCE and undergraduate students starting 2012/13

Tuition fee loans are available to help pay the cost of your tuition fees. From 2012, both full time and part time students can apply for the fee loans.

Full time - Tuition fee loan of up to £9,000 will be available for new full time English students.

Part time - Tuition fee loans up to a maximum of £6,750 will be available for new part-time English students. To be eligible, part-time student should be studying at least 25 per cent of an equivalent full time course each year.

You will have to repay the loan once you have graduated and are earning more than £21,000 a year.

Returning student - students returning to the 2nd year/continuing on the course will remain on the old student finance scheme with lower tuition fees.

Who can apply?
Full time and Part-time students

How is it paid?
The fees loan is paid directly to the Institute by Student Finance England. This is done once the Institute confirms the student's attendance on the course. You will receive a final payment advice letter from the Student Finance England, which you will be required to show at enrolment as proof of how your fees will be paid.

Maintenance Loans for living costs

Full time students can apply for a Maintenance Loan to help cover living costs. You can get up to £7,675 depending on your household income and where you are living and studying. 65% of the maintenance loan is not income-assessed, the remaining 35% is assessed on your household income. The amount students are eligible for depends on their individual circumstances. For 2011/12, the maximum student loans for studying in London are:

Up to £7,675 - living away from parental home

Up to £4,375 - living at parental home

Who can apply?

UK and EU Students. Some EU students may be eligible if resident and working in the UK before commencement of the course. Please click the link for more information: EU students -help with living costs and other expenses

Maintenance Grant (or Special Support Grant)

The Maintenance Grant is non-repayable and helps cover living costs throughout the academic year. Only full-time students can get Maintenance Grants for their living costs. New students from lower income households will be eligible to receive maintenance grant which is worth up to £3,250 a year. The actual grant the students gets will depend on their household income.

Household income of £25,000 or less: student receives maximum £3,250 full grant
Household income of £25,000 - £42,600: student receives partial grant
Household income of more than £42,600: student receives no grant

The Special Support Grant replaces the Maintenance Grant for people who, as a full-time student, can claim income-related benefits.  The amount you can get is the same as that available through Maintenance Grant. Students cannot receive both a Maintenance Grant and a Special Support Grant.

Students in receipt of the Maintenance Grant may receive a reduced amount of Maintenance Loan. The amount of Maintenance Loan will be reduced by £0.50 for every £1 of Maintenance Grant you receive. If you get the Special Support Grant, it won't affect how much you get through the Maintenance Loan.

How are Maintenance Loans and grants paid?
Payment is made at the start of each term into your nominated bank account by Student Finance England (SFE). In order for SFE to release your loan/grant payment, your attendance has to be confirmed electronically by us. You are required to bring the Student Loan Company (SLC) assessment letter (called University or College Payment advice) to enrolment and hand it to the funding officer at the Student Support Centre. We will then ensure that your confirmation is sent to SFE. Please note that we require the SLC payment advice letter to confirm your attendance . Once your attendance is confirmed it takes 3-5 working days until your first payment is released. The payment date on your SLC letter is base on the first day of term and not the actual date of payment.
