Training Bursary for PGCE (teacher training) for 2012 entry


Are you interested in becoming a teacher? We have some fantastic news for you which will make teaching even more rewarding. In 2012, trainees with good degrees training to be teachers in shortage subjects will be awarded with a higher bursary amount by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA). The Training Bursary is a tax-free, non-repayable bursary offered to home and EU trainees on eligible PGCE courses. Bursary amounts will vary depending on the classification of your undergraduate degree and your PGCE subject specialisation. From 2012, trainees will need at least a 2.2 to be eligible for a training bursary. For details see below:


PGCE Secondary Subjects: Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry and Modern Languages


Trainees with a first class degree will receive £20,000


Trainees with a 2:1 will receive £15,000


Trainees with a 2:2  will receive £12,000


PGCE Secondary Subjects: Art and Design, English, English with drama, Geography, History, ICT, Music, Biology and Religious Education


Trainees with a first class degree will receive £9,000


Trainees with a 2:1 will receive £5,000


Primary PGCE


Trainees with a first class degree will receive £9,000


Trainees with a 2:1 will receive £5,000


Please note the following courses do not receive any TDA bursary:
PGCE Business and Economics Education, PGCE Citzenship, PGCE Social Science

Home UK and EU students
Enrolled on a PGCE (teacher training) course that is eligible for a bursary


Note: training bursaries are not available to non-EU students or part-time students or students on employment based routes.

How to apply?

The application procedure starts after you have enroled on the course. More information will be provided when available.


Physics teacher training scholarships


Institute of Physics (IOP) Teacher Training Scholarship is available to Physics trainees with a 2.1 or first class degree. The scholarship is worth £20,000 and will be paid instead of the standard bursary. Physics trainees who are not awarded the scholarship will continue to be eligible for the standard bursaries in 2012/13. The scholarship  will provide additional benefits such as membership of the IOP and mentoring support. There will be up to 100 IOP teacher training scholarships available.
