IOE in Ghana

Welcome

The IOE is one of the most popular universities among postgraduate education students from Ghana, and we are delighted to have enrolled almost 100 Ghanaian students since 2003. Many of our Ghanaian alumni have become highly influential educationists and social scientists, and we are exceptionally proud of their work, and the work of all Ghanaian students and alumni of the IOE, whatever their professional path.

As well as welcoming students from Ghana, the IOE's world-leading researchers have also been working with the education sector in Ghana on a project called Stop Violence against Girls in School. This multi-country project is funded by Action Aid. If you are interested in finding out more, further details can be found here.

IOE visiting Ghana

In February 2012, colleagues from the IOE visited Accra to take part in the British Council Education UK Exhibition and to engage in dialogue on the importance of education in the developing world. We were privileged to meet so many outstanding students and colleagues, and to learn from our friends in Ghana about the specific challenges facing Ghanaian education, and the education sectors across West Africa.

We also joined several IOE alumni at the British Council Alumni Dinner, held in Accra on 8 February 2012. It was a great evening - thank you to all those former IOE students who joined us. If you are a former student of the Institute living in Ghana, please let us know and we will be sure to invite you to the next Alumni Dinner we attend!

This page will be updated regularly with news of the IOE's work in Ghana, and our visits to Ghana. You can also see pictures of our visit in February 2012 on the IOE's photo blog on Flickr!

About the IOE

The Institute of Education is one of the world's leading universities for studies in education and related social sciences, as well as being one of the longest-established members of the University of London. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise conducted for the UK government, the IOE was ranked number one for education studies, and in the top ten across all disciplines, for the quality and excellence of our research.

We offer the widest possible range of Masters degrees in education and related social sciences, including some truly innovative programmes of interest to students all over the world. Below is a sample of some of our programmes to which students from Ghana have previously applied - for the full list of Masters degrees available at the IOE, click here:

The IOE's Doctoral School is the largest of its kind in the UK, and offers a wide range of opportunities to doctoral candidates. Our research culture is lively, engaging and inclusive with outstanding support and supervision, as well as dedicated facilities on campus, available to all doctoral students. The IOE offers the research-focused MPhil / PhD degree, studied over a minimum of three years full-time (four years part-time) and resulting in a major thesis presenting your research findings. Also available is the International Doctor in Education (EdD) programme, which is a professional doctorate offered part-time and consisting of taught elements alongside research projects. The IOE is home to a highly prestigious Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)-accredited Doctoral Training Centre, so all doctoral graduates are equipped with world-leading research skills, and we are also the site of Europe's largest education library - an invaluable resource for any researcher. For more information on the Doctoral School, click here.

Funding and Scholarships

The IOE offers a range of scholarship and funding opportunities. The annual Centenary Scholarships competition offers exceptional opportunities to students outside Europe to obtain full funding (fees and a living allowance) for one year of Masters study or three years of Doctoral study.

The IOE and the Commonwealth Scholarships Commission also offer several joint awards each year for study at the IOE - details are here. Citizens of Ghana, alongside other Commonwealth countries, are welcome to apply.

Other sources of funding are available, with full details on these pages.
