Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS)

Head of Department - Professor Jane Martin

Welcome to the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) an interdisciplinary grouping bringing together high quality teaching and research in the history, sociology and philosophy of education and international development.

We have extensive experience and expertise in education planning, health and gender in Africa, Asia and Latin America, 'policy sociology', education, equality and human rights: issues of gender, 'race', sexuality, disability and social class.

Linking research, policy and practice, the result is an extraordinarily powerful learning community

People from all over the world come together to draw lessons for employment and training and share experiences, engaging in debates about educational values, and about social and cultural change and its implications for global social justice - past, present and future.

Participants learn from these exchanges and crucially from each other.
