The  Department is a world-leading centre for geography, business, mathematics and science education. The Department hosts top-rated initial teacher education programmes, innovative MA courses and a wide range of continuing professional development opportunities. The London Mathematics Centre, Science Learning Centre London and Development Education Research Centre are situated within the Department and contribute to its success. 

Staff within the Department have an international reputation for research, leading an extensive range of research and development projects, special interest groups and doctoral studies. The Department's student population is very diverse: students on initial teacher education courses, practising teachers and a rich and diverse range of international students.
