The Department of Culture, Communication and Media (CCM) is committed to excellence in teaching and research across multidisciplinary programmes that incorporate language and communication, music, and art, design and museology.  These areas are complemented by highly innovative work in new technologies for learning and teaching, contemporary literacies and multimodality.

The Department houses one of the IOE's most prominent research units, the London Knowledge Lab (LKL).  The LKL is an interdisciplinary collaboration between the IOE and Birkbeck College that brings together computer and social scientists from a broad range of fields.  The LKL engages in research and teaching related to learning and teaching with digital technologies in a wide range of settings.  Key research areas include, design and evaluation of interfaces, intelligent systems and personalized learning environments; digital media, culture and society; and digital technology and development.

The Department offers a wide range of Master's programmes and Secondary PGCE courses.
Postgraduate research students have access to a comprehensive doctoral studies programme and supervision from world class researchers.  The Department delivers one of the largest Secondary Teach First programmes in the country.
