Quantitative Methods

Training Programme

The Department of Quantitative Social Science and the Centre for Longitudinal Studies collaborate to offer outstanding training in quantitative methods in the social sciences. Skills in these methods are in high demand and participants on our courses come from academia, the public sector, charities, and business.

Our expertise in methods, our experience in applying them to policy issues, and our collection and use of world-class data combine to provide cutting-edge training.

Opportunities range from one and two day short courses, through Masters programmes, to PhD research.

PhD research

Both DoQSS and CLS offer first-class research training in quantitative methods. Students in DoQSS often work on issues in education, labour markets or the life course, as can be seen on the QSS webpage. Students in CLS typically make use of the world-renowned British Birth Cohorts that are under the Centre's care.  Further information can be found on the CLS website.

Short courses

We offer a range of short courses on sample surveying, data analysis techniques, and policy evaluation methods. These include modules on the MSc in Policy Analysis and Evaluation that can be taken as separate standalone training, as described in the Short Courses Guide, and Training Courses offered by our ADMIN Node of the ESRC National Centre for Research Methods.   Possible funding for these courses may be available from the Research Methods NCRM Training Bursaries.

Masters programmes

Our programme in the economics of education, unique in the UK, provides training that leads to the MA Economics of Education and the MSc Economics of Education. The programme enables students to combine economic concepts with quantitative methods to analyse educational issues.

The MSc Policy Analysis and Evaluation offers robust quantitative and qualitative training in research methods. It focuses on real life policy evaluation, rooted in examples from across the public and private sectors. Teaching typically takes place in two day blocks, allowing part-time study alongside a job as well as full-time study.
