Building Academic Support for Development

Overview

This project has been the basis upon which the Development Education Research Centre at the Institute of Education has been established. With funding from DFID, the Centre was launched in 2006 with the aim of raising the profile of development education within UK academica and to promote a culture of research. Specifcially the resources included the development of a new academic journal, the creation of a masters course and the establishment of an international network of researchers.

Methods

The project has been implemented through a specially created staff team led by the Director of the Centre, Dr. Douglas Bourn, an internal IOE management group and an external advisory group comprised of representatives from key stakeholders in development education in the UK and elsewhere in Europe. The project has also worked closely with staff across the Institute to secure greater awareness and understanding of development education and its related fields within courses and research. The main successes have been the establishment of a new academic journal, International Journal of Development Education and Global Learning, a new masters course on development education and the  publication of Development Education: Debates and Dialogues.
