- Summary:
- My research and teaching is in new media and learning, in formal and informal settings as framed by media and cultural studies, theories of identity, new literacies and multimodality. My background is in teacher education, ICT advisory work and, for a number of years, primary school teaching in East London.
- Teaching:
- • I am currently course leader for the MA in Media, Culture and Communication.
• I teach on the Media Culture and Education core module.
• I also work on Digital Video Production modules in collaboration with the British Film Institute.
• I developed and teach on the Internet Cultures module which is concerned with the uses of social networking software in teaching and learning online.
• I contribute to teaching on the MA ICT in Education and to M level modules in PGCE courses in English and Primary Education.
- Research Projects:
- "Learner Voice and Technology at Key Stage 2" with Neil Selwyn and Sue Cranmer, funded by BECTA (in dissemination)
- Postgraduate Research:
- I am a member of the Centre for the Study of Children, Youth and Media.
My research interests include:
• Digital video production by young learners – the focus of my doctoral research;
• The use of social software and online networks for publication and learning;
• Media education: Investigating ICT, creative activity and learner agency;
• Issues in ICT in Education: Social, cultural and political aspects of pedagogy in its relationship to technology;
• The changing nature of teaching and learning in response to the pervasive use of media technologies, computer games and other online environments in formal and informal settings.
- Professional Activities:
- • I am an external examiner at Liverpool Hope University.
• I review journal articles and conference submissions for a number of publications, including Learning, Media and Technology.
