Multilingual and Multicultural London
Course Code:MMALIE_11
This module focuses on London as a global city and context for a variety of multilingual and multicultural practices. Those attending the module will examine both theoretical and conceptual issues as well as findings from empirical case studies, in both non-educational (naturalistic) and educational contexts. The theoretical and conceptual issues to be covered include globalisation, migration and the global city; multiculturalism; bi and multilingualism; literacies and multiliteracies; and community and identity. The empirical case studies examined include studies in naturalistic settings (e.g. old and new communities; large and small communities; privileged and marginalized communities) and studies in educational settings (primary education, secondary education, further education). The module aims to develop in participants a systematic understanding of multilingualism and multiculturalism and how they play out in the context of London as well as the ability to analyse and evaluate critical reading and research on multilingualism.
