Social Pedagogy: Working With Children And Young People In Or On The Edge Of Care MA
This programme will:
- Introduce you to the field of social pedagogy and its concepts and principles and a range of current theories about social pedagogic ways of working with children
- Critically explore the life circumstances of children in public care and the implication this has for professional practice with children
- Enable you to rethink ypur professional practice by investigating new ways of understanding communication and interpersonal relationships

We will develop your:
- Critical analytical skills, to help you improve your own professional practice
- Theoretical, methodological and analytical skills, enabling you to critique existing research and to undertake your own original research studies in related areas
- Understanding of sociological and social pedagocic theories and concepts of childhood and children's services, including an emphasis on children' s participation and rights
- Knowledge of the rights and responsibilities of people concerned with the care, education, health, welfare, advocacy or control of children and young people
- Awareness of the importance of including children's own views when planning and providing for them
- Knowledge of Danish approaches to social pedagogy through an exchange with Masters Degree students
Who is the programme for?
All those interested in the field of social pedagogy and direct work with children in care or on the edge of care. It will be of special interest and relevance to those working in children's services such as social care, health and education, children's rights and family policy, youth work and the justice system.
Attendance
Face-to-face evening sessions and some block attendance
How are you assessed?
By coursework assignments and a dissertation of around 20,000 words or a report of around 10,000 words plus a second optional module assignment
Entry Requirements
A good first degree in social science, education or cultural studies, humanities or a related field. You should have professional experience of working with and for children in disadvantaged circumstances.
