About our research degrees

As a research degree student you will be a member of our Doctoral School. You will have the chance to meet leading researchers, take part in stimulating events and receive rigorous training in research methods.

Our research students

Our students include recent graduates; school teachers; further education and higher education lecturers; educational psychologists; administrators; non-governmental organisation (NGO) workers; medical professionals; and professionals working in a range of other contexts.

Some are just starting their careers; others are senior members of their profession. Some are full-time students, devoting all their time to doctoral research; others are balancing the demands of work, family and study.

About 800 students currently study in the Doctoral School. Around 300 come from 60 countries outside the UK.

Our academic standards

Academic programmes at the IOE are based on the highest quality standards. We invite you to read our academic regulationsstudent policies and student handbooks, in particular our:

  • Student Guide to Policies and Procedures
  • Code of Practice for Research Degrees.

Our relevance

Our research training programmes are reviewed annually to ensure that they reflect the latest research at the IOE and elsewhere. Staff working on major projects contribute to training courses and supervise students, using examples from up-to-date research to illustrate issues and techniques. We keep you informed of new projects of national and international significance through seminars and presentations from staff, visitors and students.

Our well-developed visiting fellowship scheme attracts leading scholars in educational research from around the world. They contribute to taught programmes, lead seminars on their own latest research and are in frequent contact with our research students.

Our research builds connections between education and other related social areas, such as economic and social status, employment, health and welfare, and families. In searching out answers to major questions and looking for solutions to fundamental social issues, our research has a direct bearing on all members of society.
